Splitgrade Printing - Manually and with Heiland Splitgrade Controller
Course leader: Marc Stache, author of "Analog Photography & Developing: Your Own Darkroom" and "Analog Photography: Creative Techniques for the Darkroom".
Split-grade printing is an alternative method for controlling contrast when enlarging on multi-grade paper. Instead of using individual filters for each paper gradation, two consecutive exposures are used with the extreme filters "0" and "5".
This results in deep blacks, finely drawn lights and nuanced intermediate tones. In contrast to simple filtering, prints appear a bit more brilliant.
In this course we will first deal with manual filtering and then with the Splitgrade computer system specially developed for this purpose by Heiland electronic. The enlarger used is a DURST L1200 equipped with a Heiland LED head.
Paper (PE paper) and photo chemistry are included in the price.
Please bring 2-3 negatives to be enlarged to the course.
Manufacturer information about the Splitgrade System from Heiland electronic:
This unique system facilitates and accelerates the production of high-quality
Black and white photos on multigrade paper.
By simply measuring the highlights and shadows of the projected negative, the user first determines the contrast and brightness on the enlarger frame.
For over 30 predefined paper calibrations, a first suggestion for the correct exposure is then calculated to exactly 1/10 aperture and gradation level.
The unique filter control with shutter function automatically converts these values into a split exposure.
In addition, there are no limits to all conceivable manual corrections and post-exposures. Image results are produced much faster and creative work is encouraged - not restricted.
The advantages at a glance:
- Your image is typically created in less than 2 minutes.
- Comfortable working through automatic filter adjustment.
- Fast and precise determination of exposure time and gradation.
- Precise exposure times thanks to integrated shutter.
- No preparatory work for calibration necessary.
- Intuitive operation with illuminated buttons and plain text display.
- Manual mode allows creative work.
- Exposure in 2 phases with soft and hard light allows optional
Dodge in the hard or soft gradation phase.
- Free firmware updates for new paper programs and features.
- If you change the enlarger later
the splitgrade base unit can continue to be used.
