Jacquard's Solar Fast light ink is a water-based, non-toxic, photographic emulsion which is exposed and fixed by sunlight (UV light).
The motifs develop in sunlight or with the help of a UV lamp and impress with a wide tonal range.
It works on any absorbent natural fiber such as paper or fabric (e.g. cotton, silk, linen, but also suede and untreated wood) and is applied with the help of a sponge or brush.
The Solarfast light colors work in a similar way to cyanotypes, except that you have a wide range of colors to choose from, which can also be mixed together. Another advantage is that this color bonds directly to the fabric and therefore has good durability even when machine washed. A darkroom or expensive equipment is not necessary for the process.
We have a large selection of colors in our program, but the Solarfast colors can all be mixed together.
To store mixed paints, use containers that offer protection from UV light, such as our amber glass wide-neck bottles.
In contrast to the cyanotype process, plain water is not sufficient for developing and rinsing, but you need to add a strong detergent.
The manufacturer offers the Solarfast WASH, which we recommend for optimal results.
How it works
- Coat paper or fabric (cotton, silk, linen, but also suede and untreated wood) with SolarFast paint using a sponge or brush.
- Let something soak in.
However, the emulsion should still be slightly moist before use! - Cover the paper or fabric with objects, stencils, negative templates, plants, etc. as desired. There are no limits to your imagination.
Depending on the template, it may be helpful to weigh it down with a pane of glass - Depending on the sun intensity and color, expose to UV light for 10-25 minutes; alternatively, a UV lamp can be used.
The appropriate exposure time varies greatly depending on the light intensity and should be tested beforehand if in doubt. - Where UV light hits the material a chemical reaction takes place and activates the color.
- Put the exposed fabrics in the washing machine so that the unexposed emulsion residues are washed out. This prevents unwanted darkening.
!!! Use a strong detergent or SolarFast WASH specially developed by the manufacturer!
Paper, wood, etc. can also be washed by hand in a bowl. The water should be hot and we recommend adding about a capful of Solarfast Wash. Soak for about 10-15 minutes in running hot water.
Tips
- Create negatives for foil printing with the Jacquard Negative Generator
- For printing, we recommend the appropriate SolarFast printing films or the Fotospeed Inkjet DC Film films.
- With the help of an optionally available thickener (SolarFast Thickener), the ink can also be used for screen printing
- Solarfast colors can also be used on paper. Our BERGGER COT fine printing paper, for example, is ideal.
- Since the Solarfast solution must still be quite moist for optimal results, we recommend placing analog or printed negatives in transparent protective films.
The films can be rinsed off if necessary, but protect the delicate contents so that the templates can be used many times.
