Writings on photography
“The lens of the camera is the pupil of the educated person in socialist society.”
This is how Alexander Rodchenko succinctly formulates the program of modern photography. Although his own photographic work was extremely successful and influential in the Soviet Union, it was by no means uncontroversial and led not least to a vehement debate about the role of photography in a new society. Alexander Rodchenko is not only one of the most important photographers of the avant-garde and the "New Vision", but also the author of numerous writings that attempt to explore new paths in modern photography in a very vivid way. Many of the texts are being published here for the first time in German translation. All texts are accompanied by a detailed commentary and illustrated with photographs from the original publications. The volume thus offers a compact and descriptive compendium that is essential for understanding avant-garde photography, but also art in the early days of the Soviet Union.
