The work of Niko Luoma (*1970 in Helsinki) represents one of the most unusual positions within contemporary Finnish photography. He does not work on his fascinating abstract compositions digitally - they are created purely analogue, using multiple exposures alone. Luoma's theme and material is light; formally he is interested in the process, the repetition, the continuation. Inspired by mathematics and geometry, Luoma creates images of tremendous radiance from the traces of light.
The artist has been working on most of his astonishingly diverse series for years: in Symmetrium , for example, thousands of individual exposures form a single negative; in Kairos , drawings of motifs that for him embody that Aristotelian "right moment" form the basis for structures in which Luomas seeks to transfer the ephemeral into eternity.
