Photo Painting
Nobody uses a camera like the photographer Niko Luoma. He is not interested in capturing the world in front of his lens. He uses light to create his own visual worlds. With up to a thousand multiple exposures, he applies individual color and form elements layer by layer to the negative. Meticulous calculation and geometric finesse are the necessary foundations for this. The result is abstract photographs of impressive color intensity and luminosity. This illustrated book is based on the Adaptations series, which recreates famous works by other artists. Luoma thus stages a fascinating game for the eyes, in which the independent radiance of the images is effective at the same time as their homage to Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. With a wink, Luoma thus realizes the avant-garde's desire to free photography from the depiction of reality and turn it into art.
NIKO LUOMA (*1970, Helsinki) is one of the most independent representatives of the Helsinki School. He studied photography in Boston and Helsinki. His works are exhibited in renowned museums around the world and are represented in important collections. In 2012, Hatje Cantz published And Time is No Longer an Obstacle, which is also available in our shop.
