Image science - media aesthetics - art history
The volume does not ask about photography, nor about the medium of photography, nor about its history. Instead, it discusses in an interdisciplinary manner the image-theoretical potential of dealing with the photographic in photography and video.
The book is structured around four main themes: the photographic in the classical paragon of the arts, the photographic in the context of the theory of reproduction and appropriation, the photographic in the modernist discourse on media specificity and postmediality, and the photographic as a dispositive structure. In the discussion of photographic works (Acconci, Evans, Graham, Warhol, etc.), it becomes clear that the photographic, in its apparative conditionality, is able to direct attention in a special way to the conditions of the pictorial in the depiction.
